Personality
Erika is very social; she’s friendly, kind, terribly sarcastic and brutally honest having no qualms in calling you out on your crap or commenting on a situation (often when she shouldn’t), she’s brutally honest and while she does find it hard she can in fact sugar coat her words –however her filter isn’t that reliable and her sarcastic tongue often annoys those around her with her unneeded comments. She has a dark sense of humor and often make the inappropriate quips that others would shy away from.
She’s also deeply compassionate and ready to listen to all her of her friends problems. Erika’s the mom friend for definite, stubborn and a little pushy but always there when she's needed Erika cares deeply and thrives off of fun always ready to encourage and help those that need her. She’s worrisome and while she’s mostly overcome the anxiety that plagued her youth every so often she finds herself in danger of relapsing.
For a smart girl Erika often doesn’t think about the situations she gets herself into. Her fierce pride doesn’t allow for it not when there’s adventure to be found. This bravado however is a cleverly constructed mask – she’s incredibly vulnerable and often internalizes her feelings laughing her worries away or using humour as a defence mechanism. Usually at her own expense - this however often leads to some people (those that don't know her well) viewing her as either stupid or worthless. Neither which are correct.
At the moment she's deeply vulnerable, her parents were killed in a terrible fire (which may or may not have been started by her psycho cousin) and now she's the sole guardian of her troubled 17 year old brother. She's cracking under the pressure internalizing her feelings under a standoffish persona that hardly shows the real Erika. She's hurt but not broken and while she's an incredibly strong person she's very close to cracking.

Erika Cornelia Rhodes was born on a cool August day, her parents both practising witches brought her up in a very loving environment. Regardless of the fact her mother came from wealth Erika rarely visited her grandparents, most contact consisted of a card at Christmas and a very expensive gift – which her mother immediately scoffed at. When she was six the family welcomed another addition as her younger brother Thomas was born – much to Erika’s chagrin.
At first Thomas proved to be troublesome he cried a lot and was far too boring to play with – but Erika found her fun elsewhere usually in the form of bossing the other children in the neighbourhood around. As she grew older her parents slowly began to involve her in the magical aspect of her life – and she showed promise as fledgling witch even from a young age, though she did (and still does) struggle with potion making. The hardest aspect was of course secret keeping, but after the terrifying stories her father told her she knew she had to keep it a secret.
When Erika was fourteen her grandparents had called the family to a gathering. There Erika found she had a number of cousins and relatives (who were mostly snobs). It was uncomfortable and while Erika was able to practise her wittier comebacks with her spiteful cousin Amelia – she couldn’t help but feel out of place. However things changed as Grandmother Cornelia took a surprising shine to her, the woman even helped Erika clean up after Amelia cast a fire spell on her - fire being Amelia’s favourite element. The two bonded over the weekend and stayed in touch over a series of letters.
While she wasn’t the brightest student she excelled socially. Erika worked hard for her grades and eventually (once she got to high school) managed to maintain a couple of A grades. Mostly in her literature and music classes, writing was a passion of hers and one she hoped to turn into a career. She was driven and had the ambition (proven when she became editor of the school newspaper) and finally made it to college. Unlike her brother who couldn’t seem to avoid trouble. Erika tried to protect him but his troubled nature made it difficult worsening once her father stopped his magic lessons on account of her brother’s instability.
Nevertheless college was amazing and while she felt guilty for abandoning her brother in his hour of need she knew she couldn’t bail him out of every mistake he made.
Four long years later and Erika finally graduated. Everything was perfect, but then the news came of her grandmother’s death. Erika was heartbroken and as the family gathered for the reading of the will she found herself almost completely consumed by sadness. Longing for the times they never shared together and grieving the fact that there were secrets only she knew.
Shockingly, Cornelia had left the entire estate to Erika’s family (only to pass on to the rest of the family following their demise). Cousin Amelia was enraged and vowed that she would have what was owed to her and Erika pretended not to be smug. The family finally moved to the old house and began making a life – Erika had found a job with the local newspaper (her blog was also taking off) and her brother had begun experimenting with elemental magic and her parents made plans for an early retirement.
However all good things must come to an end. It is not known how the fire began, or why the doors were locked and all the keys had disappeared. Erika and Thomas escaped only by the skin of their teeth, their parents on the other hand were not so lucky. The police blamed her troubled brother for starting the fire (due to his recent involvement in a fire at an abandoned building) and he escaped prosecution by the skin of his teeth. As the eldest child the fortune passed immediately to Erika and without hesitation the young girl packed up her few things (as well as her brother) and skipped town. They needed a fresh start. Somewhere safe – the cause of the fire still played on her mind.; After all Amelia had vowed revenge – and her favourite element was fire…
