The news of Napoleon's defeat was everywhere, on the lips of every man, woman, and child in the country. Even the poets and literary set, usually enamored of their muses and art, were a-buzz with anticipation. The politicos were awaiting an end to the long and expensive war, hoping to turn their attention to domestic tensions at home. And the women, married and unmarried, awaited the return of their brothers, lovers, husbands, and fathers from abroad. It seemed that peace had finally arrived, but would it last?
