| Max sighed softly and started to take his jacket off, carefully laying it on one of the nearby rocks that he always swept clean. He had finally found an apartment that he would be able to afford, with the amount he would be making at Strongbrew Café, but he couldn’t move in right away. In a couple of days, he would have running water, a roof over his head, access to a free laundry machine. The stove and oven didn’t really matter to him since he didn’t need to eat, but he supposed it might be nice in case he was craving something human-made. It was always nice to have options.
Right now, he was just living day to day. He snuck off every few days to feed on a few cows or horses on the farmland surrounding Valhaven, but then he came back to this horrible cave and just…lived here. He didn’t have much with him – a few changes of clothes, and a few toiletries to actually make himself look presentable in the public, but that was all. It was embarrassing, really, but it was just how he had lived since he left home at twelve years old.
Looking around in disappointment, he flinched as thunder crashed outside. There was a pretty fierce storm going on out there, but if he was at the back of his cave he tended to stay dry. The rain didn’t make its way this far back. Peeling his damp clothing off, he changed into the single pair of pajamas that he owned and curled up on a small pile of his already dirty clothes from earlier in the week. Facing the cave mouth, he sighed softly as he tucked a hand under his head. It was unlikely he would sleep through the thunderstorm – he hated storms. But he could at least get some rest, if anything.
Allowing his eyes to slide closed for a few moments, he attempted to drift off until he saw lightning illuminate his cave behind his closed eyelids. Whimpering slightly and tensing up, he flinched again as thunder crashed. Oh yes, it would be a very long night indeed. Slowly opening his eyes again, his heart leapt into his throat and he shot upright just as another flash of lightning showed a figure standing in the mouth of his cave. No way! “J-James?!”

Valhaven was a tiny town...a tiny settlement that almost took James back to his earlier vampire days, but it was much larger than that of the lost colony...it held that sort of feel though. It was quiet, almost too quiet even for his liking...but that didn't mean much. He had been through an assortment of towns over the course of his life, and this one was just another little boring town that he passed through, whether he did anything here...that remained to be seen. While not all of James had changed over the course of a few hundred years...he was twisted into something he couldn't imagine before. A non-religious and very troubled being, and he decided to spread a bit of that horror and grief to passer bys, the poor souls who ended up being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
So far though, the vampire had done nothing to this town, it held no interest of him, though...he'd only just gotten here earlier in the day, and most people seemed to stay indoors due to the crazy storm that was rolling through. Instead of exploring the inner town, James decided to work around the outside, see what there was to see and maybe once the weather lightened up, once the people were out on the streets again...then he could make his move. His silent...stealth...and deadly move. Not minding the rain, nor the wind that accompanied it, James just kept on the move, wandering around Valhaven's outskirts, noting where things were...like the campsite, some hiking trails, things that could serve plenty of entertainment should he decide to target anyone for a bit of fun. Fear was fun, of that he was certain.
After having sort of surveyed the area, gathered a good feel for where the hangouts in this region were, James figured he could start to see where things were in town...but a certain scent had caught him a little off guard. It was in the area, not close to any of the campsites or docks, but in arms reach of the lake and the hiking trails not too far off. A frown had pulled at the pale man's lips as his eyes narrowed, almost dangerously. He was going to seriously regret some things from his past, wasn't he? In full irritation mode, James moved, following that scent, or bond, whatever it was, it got a little stronger the closer he got, that's how he knew he was going the right way. Going back a few years – or a lot of years - James was only reminded of the one time he had tried to replicate his own transformation, something he hadn't ever asked for, trying to save a life...and in the process...creating probably the worst vampire ever known to man.
This couldn't be possible though, Maximus was definitely the worst vampire out there, he surely should have just...starved to death, or gotten himself captured and killed with how lousy he was...but upon getting to the mouth of a small cave...low and behold. James wasn't sure whether to be impressed or completely revolted at the fact that Max was still alive. How? Just...how? Stepping up to the cave mouth, hearing a crack of thunder overhead, James pulled his arms across his chest before hearing those fearful muttered words – apparently Max was still a weak child with issues, but that wasn't too surprising. “Still the same scared little boy you always were...right, Maximus? How you're alive is even beyond me...I was...so sure you would have starved yourself by now.” Or gotten captured, beheaded, something like that. While James was a bit surprised, his tone held a darkness to it, and maybe some amusement. If anything...he did enjoy toying with people...Max was no exception. Taking a few more steps into the cave, out of the storm from outside, James couldn't help but approach the frozen-in-time teenager, kneeling down, resting an arm on his knee as he stared towards the kid. “Did you miss me?”
Of course he couldn't help but taunt the poor guy, already James knew that Max was terrified, as he should be.

| As if it wasn’t bad enough that it was storming outside, Max had been far too focused on that to feel the awful creature that was coming closer. It wasn’t until his cave was lit up that he could ignore the feeling any longer, especially considering now he could see the man in question. Shooting up to his hands and knees, he stuttered out James’ name and could only stare, quivering fearfully. The storm was all but forgotten in the background. James was by far the more dangerous of the two, both physically and mentally. He looked…annoyed. That wasn’t so surprising, but as soon as James spoke, the words sent chills down Max’s body.
He had called him ‘Maximus’, on top of that. “I…I…” The words just wouldn’t come. James was spot on – he hadn’t changed at all over the years. He was still the ‘scared little boy’, and likely always would be. His green eyes were bright with fear as he simply stared at James as the older man approached, and he swallowed nervously as he shrank back from his Sire. He hadn’t felt this way since the last time he had seen James…
He had stayed alive by using the large animals on farms, being sure to circulate and not take too much from one creature. Yes, it made him a weaker vampire (he was already weak enough but this only heightened the difference since he refused to feed off of humans), but he just couldn’t bring himself to drink human blood. It was bad enough drinking animal blood! When James knelt in front of him, though, Max’s lips trembled as he continued to shrink back, pushing himself against the back wall of the cave. He was terrified, but there was also a slight thrill as he realized how close his Sire was to him. A thrill that was quickly squashed down by the fear.
“I…what…how…?” How in the world had he found Max?! His whole body was trembling from fright, and he realized he had nowhere to go. Without even touching him, James had effectively trapped Max in his own cave. What was he going to do? He couldn’t just…muscle past James. The other was far stronger, and Max wasn’t even sure he had the mental capacity to do such a thing.

This was a real big surprise wasn't it? James hadn't imagined he'd find anything within this quiet little town, it was a lot like the other small towns he had breezed through, but the scent that had caught his attention, that was beyond surprising. The bond between Sire and Fledgling was...impressive, and while he disowned Maximus as his own creation...that tie could never truly be destroyed. James had been convinced a long time ago that Max had died...he had starved himself or gotten captured, beheaded, burned at the stake like the good old days...but this proved him wrong, and he just had to wonder...how this was possible! Max was by far the worst vampire that James had ever come across, and that was exactly why he ditched the wimp not too long after his creation, left him on his own to die...and somehow he had made it!
Stepping into the cave, escaping the thunderstorm from overhead, James was...far beyond amused, as well as surprised to see Max there, actually there! He looked terrified. Good. A smirk formed on the older vampire's lips, he couldn't help the taunting words, easing closer, making Max all the more frightened...that was the point. The poor kid could barely even talk as he sank back, getting himself cornered. This was oddly satisfying, but then again...how odd was it, really? For James...it was almost a game, fear was a fun thing. He certainly had changed a lot since back in the day.
Ah yes! Finally some comprehensible words!
A small sound of amusement escaped James' lips as he had gotten up from where he had knelt, but not stepping back in the slightest, why try and make Max feel more at ease anyways? “What do you mean, how?” He started, tilting his head slightly, there was a certain mocking-tone to his voice, as well as in his stance as he wondered just how long it would take for the kid to either...cry...or try to flee. “If you're referring to how I found you...I'd know that pathetic vampire stench anywhere...plus our bond is much stronger than you probably realize. I can find you anywhere.” He was quick to inform, taking a harsh step forward and reaching down for the front of Max's shirt, forcing him up to his feet. “Get up.” Releasing his fledgling, just as forcefully, a scowl forming on his face, James didn't want to be in charge of Maximus anymore, but he was his Sire, his superior, and always would be. “Here you are...living your way out of a cave...still feeding off of animals, are we? You are the worst vampire I've ever met...” Replacing his frown with something of an amused expression, James stepped off to the side, allowing a small path for Max to try and get past him if he dared. “Unless you want to prove me wrong...the town isn't far...”

See? He's not THAT stupid... | If Max’s heart still beat, it would have been thundering just as loud as mother nature was, outside. James was here! He had found him, and all of that terror and…excitement…had returned full force upon seeing James standing in the mouth of his cave, but as soon as James moved closer Max couldn’t help but shrink back fearfully. His breathing was harsh and ragged as the cold stone pressed against his back, but he couldn’t seem to tear his eyes away from his Sire’s beautiful face. Even when he was terrified, there was still that thrill of being in James’ presence. He was Max’s Sire. There would always be a bond of some sort between them.
But Max was curious as to how James had actually found him. Watching as his Sire rose up to his feet, Max bit his lip as he was still stuck in an incredibly submissive position. James held power over him in every way, shape, and form. He even had the height, now that he had stood up and Max was still crouched fearfully. His eyes were wide as James asked what he meant when he asked how his Sire was here and had found him, and he could hear the scorn in the older man’s voice.
If it was possible, Max shrank down even more as he was reminded about the bond they shared. He hadn’t been with James long enough to learn very much about vampirism, and he swallowed nervously. “O-Oh…” he said softly, embarrassed that he didn’t know even that much. Letting out a yelp of surprise as he was hauled to his feet, he trembled as he stared up at James. Even when they were both on their feet, he was taller. Adjusting his shirt as he was rather abruptly released, he swallowed again thickly.
Ducking his head as he was called out on living in a cave and off the animals, he winced as he was called the ‘worst vampire’. He knew that much, at least. But he had never wanted to be a vampire, in the first place! And he was getting an apartment! It was just…well he hadn’t had the chance to move in yet. Not until the beginning of the month. Which was soon.
Watching as James stepped to the side, though, Max looked fearfully up at his Sire. He wanted Max…to go into town? And feed? “I…I can’t…” He wouldn’t! “W-Why…are you…here…?” Maybe he could…run past…but no, not likely. James was no fool…
