This had to be the right thing to do, there really was no other option, was there? Mari had some money tucked away, having saved her allowances and from any part time jobs she had had over the years...but she couldn't support herself with a full time job, go to school, and be able to pay for it all despite her parents' financial background. She didn't want to stay home, she couldn't. Things had gotten bad, and from bad they got worse, it drove her away...and that was what led her out of the state, almost across the entire country to her safe haven – or rather, Valhaven. It was kind of funny, wasn't it? Nerves were really started to kick into the blonde's state of mind as her airplane had descended from the sky. Was it nerves, or was in the change in pressure from the decent?
After the plane had landed and passengers were allowed to carefully exit – and go through customs of course – Mari held onto her carry-on bag tightly, making quick to get out of customs and start looking for her luggage. While she was moving homes, the blonde didn't bring a ton with her, just necessities and what not, she figured she could restock up on things out here if she truly needed to. There were a ton of people here...how was she ever going to find Roland in this crowd? Not worrying about that just yet as she watched the luggage carousal move around, she wedged herself between a few people to grab her bag and almost struggle to pull it off before it hit the ground on it's wheels with a small thud. Adjusting one bag over her shoulder and gripping at her heavier suitcase in the other, rolling it behind her, now it was time for the difficult part.
Navigate the airport and try to find one person in a sea of people – the worst game of 'needle in a haystack' possible.
As she wandered out of the main crowd that was trying to get their luggage – or curse at the fact that they had to wait so long for said luggage to appear – Mari felt a frown pull at the corners of her lips. Things were changing for her...and so far it seemed as if her life have moved into a downwards spiral, at least to her immediate family. That was why she chose to move, she wanted something far better, and the atmosphere at home was killing her drive to be successful. She couldn't be the parental figure, she wanted to live her life successfully, happily, two things that never would have happened back home in Rhode Island with just her and her freakishly panicked mother. Not to mention the amount of possibilities of what could happen once her father got out of jail, Mari had been the one to call the police...so she was sure that if there was a target placed on anyone's forehead, it was hers. The best thing she could do was leave...and while she hadn't seen her uncle in quite some time, he had always been very good to her as a kid.
He just...didn't need to know exactly why Mari just wanted to up and move, leave her friends and life behind on the east coast and head across the country. In time maybe she'd tell him the state of his sister, but for now...it was strictly just for school reasons. Swallowing hard for a moment, not having noticed she had stopped in the middle of the hallway just thinking about things, Mari started to move again, trying to get to the outside edge of the aisle so she wasn't blocking anyone's way anymore. Reaching into her pocket and pulling out her cell phone, she had to check, just to make sure that she hadn't gotten a message about Roland being late, or something or another. “...Hopefully he didn't forget...” She whispered to herself, keeping an eye on her phone and keeping to herself per usual, if she didn't find him or hear from him soon...she supposed she could try and find a taxi to take her the rest of the way to Valhaven.

--------------- It had been a long time since Roland had even thought about his sister, or her family for that fact. Which in some ways was a bad thing more than it was good. There was never a lasting connection between the two and it was hard enough keeping up with what he had. He had never minded Mari, his niece which also made it harder to turn her away. She had asked to come and stay with him and while at first he had had his doubts, in the end he threw them away. What kind of person would that make him for not letting her live with him. While he might not have known all of the reasons, he knew how his family was. He knew that things were hard to tuck away under it all.
With all of that out of the way he found himself in the lot of the large airport. It was a few hours out from Valhaven and the ride was not all that bad. He was not even sure what he would have in common with her anymore. Then it was being loud and obnoxious. Now however, she was out of her teens and hopefully not one of those people. By what he had known about her revently that did not seem likely and he was thankful for that at least. Not to say that he was sharpest crayon in the box, but he was at least self aware. The lot seemed more full than he had ever seen it. People were everywhere and that he was just not used to it.
Roland had thought about riding his bike, but he did not figure that she wanted to partake in a three hour drive on that. Much less with whatever she might have brought with her. The truck that he got out of stuck out like a sore thumb, however it was not like it did not run. It was in fact a nice truck, not one that had just come out of the junk yard. Moving his way into the lobby of the airport through the people his eyes were now looking out for her. The people were thick and he did not see her at all. It was in this moment that he wished that he had brought a sign to wave in the air. An over the top ridiclious one that she would never forget. But he again thought better of it. Not really wanting to start off on the wrong foot.
There were many blondes rushing by and it felt like he was in hyperspace. His eyes caught glance of the light pink attired blonde standing alone. He gave a soft smile at the girl. "Mari!" He said in a more than jubliant tone of voice. One that was not his inside voice. Making his way to her the smile still there, without a second thought or really a first he pulled his niece into a hug. He had not seen her in a rather long time, too long in fact. It was not that he wished to be away from his family, but it seemed that his sister and parents never saw eye to eye on anything, ever. It was always an argument now a days and that was something that he just wanted to avoid at all costs.

--------------- The more Mari stood and thought about everything she had just left behind, the more her anxiety started to flare up. She knew this had to be the right choice, when things weren't going right and you were unhappy...you had to change it, even if it meant removing certain things – or people – from the picture. She loved her parents...before they twisted into things she never imagined possible, she wanted to cherish the good memories she had with them, and not think of them as they were today. Cutting them out of the picture for now was the best option, as well as putting a great deal of distance between them. There were obvious things that Mari was going to miss about her home...the fact that she knew where everything was, her few close friends...and now she was starting over completely from scratch. She'd have no idea where to go, know not a single soul out here, and likely be dubbed as the 'new girl' for a long time considering it was a smaller town.
Or it could be the best thing that had ever happened to her.
Having gotten off to the side with her carry on slung over her shoulder, her luggage tucked behind her where she stood, the blonde just looked at her phone, no messages, no calls...she was probably just a little too anxious about all of this. It was her first real big move, and it was probably understandable for her to act this nervous, but even still, Mari needed to calm down, internally at least. On the outside she looked calm, cool and collected, but on the inside was a completely different story. A small frown was still on her lips as she tucked her phone away and brought her gaze back up, hazel eyes shifting this way and that, trying to find some sign of her uncle but all that passed were a bunch of random people not paying any attention as to where they were going, who they were looking for. Obviously this was going to be a little more difficult than the young lady had anticipated.
Mari would give it a few more minutes before giving Roland a ring, and it seemed as if on that very thought...her name was called. Blinking slightly and shifting her gaze to land on the culprit of that loud and booming call of her name, Mari's lips split into a smile as she adjusted the bag on her shoulder and was quickly pulled into a hug. “Uncle Roland,” She said calmly, but fondly as she returned the friendly gesture before pulling back, still keeping the tiny quirk of a smile upon her lips. Some of her anxiety had calmed down by the very sight of him. “You must have a sharp eye, I don't think I could have spotted you in this...sea of people.” A small amused sound breezed past her lips, wondering just how well this situation was going to work out. No doubt they both had changed in some way, shape or form over the years, but hopefully they weren't too completely different. “Thanks again for letting me stay out here, I...really appreciate it, the university down here seems to have a good reputation...can't settle for less now, can we?” She teased slightly, still sticking to school being the main reason for her moving.
In time he'd get to know the full details of everything that happened back in Rhode Island, for now, why ruin the moment?
“So how long is the ride back to Valhaven anyways? Not...that it matters, I'm just curious. Mom never really talked about the town much...ever.”

--------------- "Or just old ones." Roland said to her with a small shake of his head. There was nothing worse than admitting that you were getting up there in age, but he had come to get rather used to it. He gave a small laugh at her words, "Right, well as good as it might be some of those kids are crazy. I am sure you will fit in just fine." He said to her with a wide smirk across his face. He was not sure what it was that she was all about but he was sure to soon find out. There were not that many people that he considered to be close with, but he wanted this to just click. It was harder to force that with family, but he did not want her time there to be dreadful nor his for that matter. "I am happy to oblige. Big empty house needs filling anyway."
Picking up what luggage she did not have on her he started to move to the exit. he never really liked coming out this far. While the ride might have been nice, it was the obscene amount of people that made him stay away. His head turned to look as she spoke again. "Well, your mom was never really a fan I don't think. She needed bigger and better things." He said to her. "About three hours, though it does not seem like it. There is not a lot between here and there." Answering her question moving to the truck in question. Placing her things in a secure spot, making sure they would not go anywhere he hopped down from the back.
"Is there anything you need while we are here?" Roland questioned her in turn as he moved to in the drivers seat. Some things you could not find in Valhaven with out driving out of your way. Though it was not much. He leaned over unlocking the door for her. Though it was clear that he was a bit ansy to get out of this area. But is she needed anything at all he would go to where she wanted. Of course that might have been him being a bit over the top.
"Have you ever actually been to Valhaven?" He asked her with a small tilt of his head. He did not know if Charlotte had brought her there or not. There was always poor communication there. Though that was not pointing out the fact that the last time Richard was here, Roland was less than welcoming. It seemed that Roland had always made the trips after that. That was alright with him, it seemed that it happened less and less every year until it just stopped.

--------------- Mari was pleased that her wait actually didn't take long, and that Roland had ultimately not forgotten her. A fond smile had spread across her lips upon hearing and seeing him, it felt as if things were going to go rather well...but maybe she was just putting the cart before the horse. She was going to do everything she could to help out and earn her stay, as well as stay out of the way if necessary, the last thing Mari wanted to be was a burden, she had no idea how this was going to go, but even if she was jumping the gun...it couldn't be any worse than back home, could it? “I hope I fit in...though...that isn't a huge concern to me.” Mari commented with a small shrug before it seemed like Rolad was just itching to get out of here, not that she blamed him, this was a lot of people...even more than what Mari was used to!
With her uncle having taken the luggage that she didn't physically have on her, Mari quickly followed to keep up, not wanting to slow him down as he seemed eager to leave, and frankly...so was she. Crowds like this, and social interaction in general had never really been her strong suit. “Three hours isn't too bad...” Mari murmured to herself, if anything she was sure the two could sit in comfortable silence, but they also had some catching up to do, minus some of the details of what had happened back home, that kind of news hadn't traveled, and she didn't want it to, not yet. Coming up to her ride, the pretty sturdy looking truck that Roland had, Mari held onto her carry-on, figuring she could just keep that in the seat with her as he got things settled and secured in the back. He really was being so incredibly generous with all of this, especially considering they hadn't seen one another for...quite some time, that thought alone saddened Mari a little bit.
“No, I'm good, we can go now.” She wasn't going to hold him back from that, not that there really was anything she needed, if there was, it could wait until they got to Valhaven. Moving into the passenger's seat and setting her bag down by her feet, Mari got herself buckled up and comfortable, placing her hands in her lap before her hazel eyes shifted to Roland as he asked her an inevitable question. “No, I haven't. I had pestered mom and dad about coming out here a few times...but they always found other places to visit on holiday...” Which the family vacations had been nice growing up, but Mari hadn't ever gotten to see where her mother grew up and lived, her father had been born and raised in Rhode Island so that was nothing special, that was where she was from as well. This was something completely different, and hopefully for the better. “What's it like? Or I guess...what should I know before I get there so I don't seem like a deer in headlights my first day on the street?”

--------------- "Oh, you will fit in just fine. Trust me." Roland said to her with a small smile. There was no question about that at all at least not to him. He had seen and meet a lot of the younger folks there in the Valhaven. However it was that she was his niece that he would not get accustomed to. With that being thought of he also knew how the boys were in that town. Not that all of them were like that, but now he could hold a serious grudge against one of them. He would be looking forward to that. However he also figured that at the start at least that was not something that he would have to worry about. It seemed that school was a priority and if not she was one hell of a liar.
Looking over to her as she said more to herself that three hours was not bad, he was sure that it was almost sarcasm. Though he was not going to call her out on it, at least not yet. He gave her a small smirk with a shake of his head. Giving an almost sigh of relief at her saying that she was good, he would gladly drive her all around town. Here however, it was different. He gave her a small nod at her response, of course. The diversion that his sister was always good at. Though Roland could not shake that feeling that something else was going on there. Something more than he knew about. He left it alone for now. Not wanting to be overbearing with all of that crap.
"Well it is pretty easy to learn it once you have been around. I think there are more forest than anything. About five thousand people. Cannot go wrong there. Not too crowded." He said to her as he started up the truck moving out the lot in a rather speedy action. Soon enough he was away from the airport, if he did not get pulled over first. "Though I do not think you will a problem there either. The town itself is rather small." He said looking over to her with a small nod of his head.
They had idly chatted most of the way there, which was alright with Roland. It was at least better than what he had first pictured. He did not think that they were going to get on so well with all things considering. With a little bit of off road speeding they were approaching Valhaven in no time.

Mari's world was going to be flipped upside down, at least compared to the world she was used to. Valhaven was smile, sure, but it was going to be a whirlwind of newness for her, and hopefully she had what it took to keep up with everything and get acquainted okay. No doubt she'd have some help with Roland on getting accustomed to the place, but she couldn't depend on others forever, this had been her decision...she needed to handle it like an adult and figure it out for herself, mostly that is. That would all come as soon as they actually made it to the tiny town, but Mari was rather curious to get an idea of what it was like before they even arrived, besides...they had about three hours to kill, didn't they? Though comfortable silence was no doubt in their future, killing some of the time with a little talking wouldn't hurt.
Having gotten into the truck, seated and buckled up, Mari was ready to see this new world, everything about Colorado was new to her. She had never left the upper east coast before, not for long periods of time that is, vacations didn't count. Even then, they never really went any more west than Missouri, finding nothing all that appealing in this direction, or maybe that was because her mother never wanted to get anywhere near Valhaven. Whatever the issue was, it played no role anymore. “Lots of forests? I'm sure that'll be neat to see...” Smiling a bit to herself, she could already picture it in her head, the scenery would likely be a big hit for her photography projects, and maybe just for her own personal satisfaction as well. “I'm sure I'll find a lot of neat places, did I ever mention I was minoring in photography? Sounds like Valhaven will be a perfect spot for me...”
Both for her photography, as well as life, right?
As the ride continued, Mari was happy to talk a little bit more about herself, especially since she and her uncle hadn't actually seen one another for quite some time. She was no longer a little loud kid, she was a grown young lady...wanting to better herself for the world, and with his assistance that seemed like it was possible again. She had explained her major in music composition, and talked a little bit about home and the friends she had left behind, she certainly didn't shy away from explaining her nerves about all of this either...even if that topic alone made her nervous as well! She just desperately wanted to fit in, earn her way with getting a job and what not, and hopefully find this place to be the happy hope she had always wanted, or at least better than what was back east.
Time had passed rather quickly, there really wasn't much to look at between the airport and Valhaven's outskirts, but Mari was more interested in the scenery, it was nice...unlike anything she had ever seen before, you could even see mountains! Already the atmosphere of this place was beyond appealing, she'd just adjust to the social aspect and then be just fine. “We're almost there, I take it? Looks...looks very nice, unlike anything back east...at least not where I come from...”

--------------- Roland gave her a small arch of his brow, "Photography, huh. That's pretty cool." He did not really see his sister approving of that, but she must have let it go some time ago. She was always the sort to say things like 'I am going to raise the next president.' It was never really all that easy with her. Ever. "What are you majoring in then?" He questioned out of curiosity. Though either way it was not really like he could help in that aspect. Sure he would try is asked, but he figured that she would not do all that much asking if any at all.
The drive had actually been rather nice. He did not expect to have it go that well at all. In fact he almost expected her to say turn around. But she had not at least not yet. As they got with the town he looked to Mari as she spoke. "We were actually in town about three miles back. Hard to believe I know. State lines and all that." He said to her with a small shake of his head. "I figure you can settle in first. At least take the home place in, might be the best way to start you know?" He questioned, though it was not really a question.
It was more like a valley than anything. You could see most if not all of the buildings from the highest peak. Taking his first turn on the road, and then another left, they were not on black top anymore. Roland started to speed up on the dirt road leading further into the valley. A few miles in he took another left, as he continued to gain speed. His head turned to smirk at her as at the end of the road you could see a house. A red one, that over looked a lake. To the left of the main house was a garage and to the right was another house of sorts, a little smaller than the main one. He finally came a stop near the garage but not inside of it.
He turned off the truck and got out shutting the door behind him and hopped into the back again. Though he stood there waiting for a moment as she got out. When he knew that she could hear her he spoke, "Now either you can share the main house with me." He said with a small pause, "Though it can get a bit loud in there. Mostly on Friday and Saturday nights." He said with a childish laugh, "Or you can live there." He said pointing to the smaller home. "Has its own kitchen, bath, living area and basement."

As weird and awkward as Mari had thought this would be...it really wasn't. She felt pretty comfortable with Roland, but...she also felt there was distance between them. It was almost like starting over again, but...without all the crazy awkward stuff to begin with. She knew him, he knew her, they had just...changed over the past several years, she wasn't a little kid anymore, but a young lady wanting to do good with her life. While her major and minor studies might not be as impressive as that of her parents...Mari didn't want to go down that road, the money was good yes, but...she had a fondness for something more artistic than that. Moving a hand to tuck some of her hair behind her ear, the blonde kept her eyes down for a second, unsure if her major sounded stupid or not, most people gave her a weird look whenever she said it. “I'm...going to major in music composition.” She lamely answered, but so far...Roland seemed like the least judgmental person she could come across.
Though there was still time to change that, she supposed.
“We are? I guess...I wasn't paying that much attention then.” Mari admitted with a small shrug, letting her eyes gaze back out the window to watch the scenery passing by. As the speed picked up, Mari did find a smile forming on her lips again, this place was so different than where she came from...she really thought it would do her some good to get away. While a big change, she was certain that it was change that she needed...or at least she was mostly certain. She'd find out in a few days if this was a good decision or not, not like she had any other choice at the moment. As they had gotten off the blacktop and pulled up to a rather remote lake house, Mari's eyes were simply drawn to it. It was so...pretty out here. Getting out of the truck and pulling her bag over her shoulder again, she looked around in awe. It really was unlike anything she had seen before, what a perfect view!
Listening to her uncle speak, the blonde turned around, spotting him in the bed of the truck retrieving her things – which wasn't necessary yet again. “You've got...a lot of space out here, a lot of property...” She mused for a moment looking towards the tiny almost 'house' in which he had described. It would be like her own little cottage or something! “Wow...really?” She wasn't going to just take it, unless he really thought that was the best plan...and if she was going to be in school and the main house was loud, it was likely the better option of the two. “It doesn't matter to me, Roland. Whatever you think is best...and of course I'll do what I can to help out.” She assured rather quickly, taking a few idle steps around the truck to keep looking at the great outdoors. “I want to make sure I earn my keep here, you know. I'm anything but dead weight.” A tiny laugh did escape Mari's lips as she approached the back of the truck, still keeping that fond expression. “I can take my own luggage though...you don't have to do that. A tour would be nice though.”

--------------- Roland gave her a small nod of his head at her answer. When he had went to college he majored in criminal justice, and had went in the total opposite direction. He was not sure why it just happened that way. Roland had planned to do something way different than what it was that he was doing now. As they made way to the house, Roland thought of his presentation on how he was going ask which it was was that she wanted to live. He was by far going to restrict her on anything, Roland for one would be a hypocrite if he did anything like that, and two well that was just not him.
A smirk pulled at him as she spoke to him. While he was not going to boast about his property, it did mean something to him. He had worked for it and that was about all that there was to it. "Right, the other house it is." He said to her with a small laugh. Of course it mattered to her she was just not saying it. "Oh, I know you will help out it. If you are anything like your mother, your definition of help is hand outs." He said to her with a small smirk. With a small shake of his head and a slight roll of his eyes he bent down to pick up her luggage.
"Of course a tour it is." He said to her as he planted a foot on the tailgate and jumped down from the back of the truck. Moving to the other small accommodations he reached up with his other hand above the door frame and slid the key from the top. Opening up the door he removed the key and turned to hand it to her. "Small as it is, well I'd imagine it would be perfect for you." He said to her with a small nod of his head before fully stepping inside. "The living room and the kitchen." He said pulling her bags up to sit on the counter. "The last resident kept decent care. You however can do change anything you want. I am not beneath Hello Kitty wallpaper." He said to her in a teasing manner tagged with a smirk.
He moved to the far end of the small house, still in view opening up another door. "This is the basement." He said nodding for her to follow, flipping on the light and moving down the stairs. "It is not too bad down here. Gets a little hot when you run the dryer." He said with a small shake of his head. However it seemed that it had had been recently furnished and finished. There was a smell of paint that had not fully filtered out.

So far, so good. Mari had been very skeptical about all of this to start, even if she had been the one to reach out to Roland and ask for something of a...safe haven – though not in those exact words. She had wanted to get away, go to school and not have to worry about the family issues that had been resting on her shoulders back home. This was a nice new start, but she had been worried that she and her uncle had changed far too much for this to even feel comfortable. She was happy to be wrong. Roland was still the same fun fellow, a little rough around the edges, but that kept things interesting, right? She was the one that probably changed, not quite as loud and outgoing, but Mari was still herself for the most part. She was sure they'd get along fine. As they got to his rather large plot of land, Mari got out of the truck, slinging her carry-on over her shoulder and just...gaping at the amount of space there was here.
He had like, two houses!
“I don't know about hand outs...” Not with her mother anymore at least, but that was a topic for another day...maybe. Keeping a smile on her face and letting out an exasperated sigh as Roland continued to lug around her luggage, Mari just accepted it and followed him towards the smaller building, it really was perfect, just as he said. She didn't occupy that much space, so even just a room would have been more than enough. “I'd like to think this is more than perfect...” Mari quietly commented to herself upon stepping inside. It was like she was gaining her own apartment, or town home. It was plenty big for her! This was great, more than she could have ever asked for. A laugh escaped her lips at Roland's teasing, looking around and already starting to mentally plan what she wanted to do to the place, at least décor wise. “I don't think there will be any need for Hello Kitty...I like pink but...I think I've outgrown all that.” However, there were a few tweaks she wanted to make, get the place feeling like home. Not to mention, now that she was moving in...she was going to need to get some things to...actually live.
Following him around and still mapping out ideas in her head, Mari was sure she was going to love this, it was close to Roland, so if she ever needed help...she knew where to go, but it made her independent as well. “This really is perfect, you know?” She had to comment again, making mental notes of what he had said about the basement, not that she'd probably go down there much, if only for the laundry and what not, maybe a little area for her photography things! The options were limitless. “I'll just need to head into town and grab some things...detergent, dish soap, other things like that...and then I think I can officially move in and get settled.” She was happy to have had money saved back for all of this, it would get her by for awhile, but she did need to get a job, even if it was only part time, just so she could stay afloat with paying for school and other things around here. “I'm planning on getting a job out here too...so if you know of any places that are hiring...I'm all ears.”
Valhaven was turning out to be more than she anticipated, and in a good way. This was a good thing.
