--------------- Mari had a plan, not that she was guaranteed anything but if anything she was going to try hard to earn her keep here in Valhaven. She had already been floored by how nice Roland's place was, the guy obviously had money, but that wasn't the point. Mari wanted to work, she wanted to pay for her own schooling, and while she did have money set aside from saving while she was working in high school...it would only get her so far. There were quite a few things she needed to pay for and she certainly wanted to prove her worth. First thing was first though, she needed to find a job. Having looked through a few of the businesses downtown, Mari was certainly aware of places to avoid, as well as places to try out. There was the one and only bar in town, which she would apply at as a last resort if it came down to it, but there were a few other places to try, places a lot more appealing than that.
First on the list was the newly opened cafe, Strongbrews. The name was nice and from the brief research Mari had done on the place - not that there was a whole lot to find considering it had opened not long ago - it seemed like a decent place to start. All Mari had to do was be nice and make sure that she was part time, having to work around whatever her school schedule would be come the next semester. To keep it simple, she just had to be herself. Walking down the sidewalk, looking at the few businesses that lined the road, the blonde could feel a small twisting in her stomach, things like this always made her a bit nervous, that and public speaking...but hopefully the owner was kind and easy to talk to, that would make this whole ordeal a thousand times easier. Stepping up and finding the cafe in question, Mari really liked how the outside looked, now really hoping that this place was the winner.
Slightly clutching at the few resumes in her hands she pressed forward, wandering inside and getting a really good vibe from the place. It almost reminded her a bit of home, calm and quiet, but also had life to it. With a tiny smile on her face, Mari tried to remember to look happy, comfortable, and come across that way in personality as well, even if she was a bit nervous. Walking up to the main counter and separating one sheet from the few she had printed off, she looked towards the only person behind it, a blonde woman that looked to be not too much older than she. "Excuse me, I'm looking for a woman named...Kallisto Motte? She owns the place, right?" Mari's tone tried to hold some pep to it, she was trying at least that was all that mattered. She was determined to earn her way around here, no matter what she had to do.

There was something about Valhaven which had initially drawn Kallie in. The town was fairly quiet, the population rather small. It was rural which was the best part of it.Sticking to the bare minimum which was just enough to keep this little place going. It had potential to be something more. Enough run down homes and buildings to work on. Enough people to get to know. Enough woodlands to have some private runs. She didn’t think she could have found a better home for her family.
She was proud of what she’d accomplished in just a month. Leaving the others to work on the house she’d focused on creating a business. It was a small piece to a bigger plan for them all. Though Kallie couldn’t deny she’d fallen in love with the little building. All it needed was some care. It didn’t come without its drawbacks, the plumbing wasn’t always reliable. Mop in hand she worked on the floor behind the counter. The sink had blocked up again. Not the first time this had happened.
She didn’t take much notice when another customer entered. Waiting until they arrived at the counter before stopping and glancing up. A younger woman stood on the other side of the wooden counter. Human as far as Kallie could tell. As she spoke Kallie slowly leaned the mop up against the sink and wandered closer to her counter. “You can just call me Kallie” she smiled as her arms came up into a fold. Not something the average customer would say so she’d already piqued her interest. “What can I do for you, miss…?” she tilted her head and waited for the woman to finish her sentence to give her a name.

This was one of the first steps Mari needed to make to get herself settled here. She was very adamant about getting a job and not being just a leech while staying with Roland. She wasn't sure what it was she could do to help around the house but...anything she could...she would. If that meant helping pay for food, or other bills, that was fine, but she always wanted to be sure to pay her own way to college, as well as any other things she needed or wanted while out here. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to settle into one of the shopping complexes to see what clothes they had...considering Mari hadn't brought her entire room back from home with her. She was severely lacking in 'feeling at home' for the moment, but she hoped to change that...in due time.
First thing was first, job hunting, the other stuff could come later.
The best place to start was definitely not the bar, that was an atmosphere Mari wasn't sure she could get behind and feel comfortable, at least not as a worker. She didn't see herself as a bar-goer by any means, but that wasn't to say she wouldn't end up there once in awhile, if maybe only for food and a soda...maybe – that just depended on how many rough days she had out here, which was something of a scary thought in itself. The Strongbrew Cafe though, that practically screamed Mari as she wandered up to it, finding the appearance of it rather appealing, and it made her even more hopeful for positive results, if they were even hiring. Perhaps she had come too late? Though...the place hadn't been open long, she just had to cross her fingers and hope for the best.
Going inside and approaching the counter, Mari looked to the other blonde, already questioning for the owner and finding herself nervous, but she needed to push past those nerves...unless she wanted to come across as a dorky mess with no social skills whatsoever. Putting a small smile on her lips as she was quickly spoken to, as well as confirmed that the woman – Kallie as she had put it – was the owner in question! Oh. Hopefully that dumb (in her mind) question hadn't been a bad impression to start! “Oh! I um...” She started, dropping her hazel-eyed gaze for a moment before internally chiding herself to calm down, it would be fine. 'Just be yourself.'
Inhaling a slight breath before bringing her eyes back to meet Kallie, Mari held a rather pleasant expression to her face, a little socially awkward, but she was cute as a button, wasn't she? “I was actually hoping you guys might...be hiring. I just moved here from across the country...I'll be attending the University next semester and...well...that isn't cheap to put it bluntly.” Shrugging lightly, Mari wanted to smack her palm to her forehead for beginning to ramble, but instead just...held all that internal screaming right where it needed to be, on the inside. “I have a resume if you'd like to see it...?” The blonde's eyes had widened ever so slightly before she started to fumble over herself in terms of expression and demeanor. “Oh god...my name! I'm Mari! Mari Bellamont, and who are-...I already know that...okay, bad first impression.”

Kallie waited patiently for the other blonde to fill in the gaps. When it became clear her nerves were getting the better of her, Kallies expression softened some. It reminded her a lot of someone she once knew. An old friend with a gentle soul. It was a rarity to come by these days. Kallie pushed the memories to the back of her mind. It wasn’t often she reminisced about the dead.
She let her ramble on about a job occupation and going to uni. Kallie had her siblings to do some work but was planning to put up a flier in the window for some outside help. Grinning some more she nodded “I could use some help around here actually. Between customers and the plumbing having a mind of its own I’ve really had my hands full” she waved her hand at the mop and sink as she spoke. Highlighting the fun task of calling in yet another repairman. Even the basement seemed to be falling apart.
Reaching out to take one of the sheets from her she began scanning the information to seem like she knew what she was doing. Kallie had never written out a resume, if she had it’d been pages long with the amount of times she’s moved and picked up odd jobs. Listening to her panic as she finally introduced herself Kallie brought her head up from the sheet and shook her head. “Relax, you’re doing just fine. My first job was a waitress. I spilt a drink over my first customer and got my words all mixed up as I panicked, ended up shouting “Are you sorry!?” at the poor guy…” She laughed a little as she retold the story. While it’s funny now, it wasn’t at the time.
Folding the resume she slid it into the pocket of her apron and wandered off to serve them both up a drink. “You take coffee, Mari?” pouring herself one first she hesitated on pouring the second mug before getting a definite answer. Kallie turned back to her with a warm smile. She was looking forward to sitting down and getting to know this other person. Hopefully she won’t spill coffee on Kallie.

Mari had the tendency to babble – even for as socially awkward as she was – whenever she felt uncomfortable, or spout out random facts that had nothing to do with the conversation at hand. Hazel eyes kept flicking between looking at Kallie back to the papers in her hands before actually handing one over, maybe a little hesitantly at first before it seemed like there was an opening, and hopefully she could score that job rather easily. All she had to do was keep being...not too weird. “I'm sure you're very busy...new businesses are always a load of work.” Not that Mari would know from previous experience, but she did remember how hard of work it was for her folks with their own medical practice, until shit had hit the fan and that all went up in flames. This...wasn't on that scale, but she had to appreciate all the hard work Kallie was putting into this place, it looked awesome!
Having forgotten to introduce herself, Mari was certain that she had made a bad impression, those were the most basic of manners and she couldn't even get those right! Starting to have that bit of panic, Mari's gaze and attention was grabbed as Kallie tried to ease that a bit with a story of her own. A small smile remained perked on the younger blonde's lips, she appreciated that...truly. Sometimes it was hard to deal with situations, or to not be too hard on yourself, it was for Mari at least. “Heh, I guess...there are worse things then.” She nodded in appreciation towards Kallie, maybe this would be a good time to get her nerves in check, hopefully land a job and be able to prove her self worth around here. Roland was being incredibly generous to her, so the least she could do was earn her way, not be a bum, and prove that she was worth having around.
As Kallie moved to get herself a drink, Mari gave an affirmative nod to the question directed her way. “With an unhealthy amount of sugar, please and thank you.” The tiniest of laughs escaped the blonde, she was starting to feel a bit more at ease, having gotten a good feeling of what Kallie would be like, even though they hadn't actually spoken too terribly much so far, it'd only been a few moments after all. Either way, Mari liked to think she was at least somewhat decent at judging someone's character, so far she really liked the Strongbrew's owner, as well as the cafe itself. It would definitely suit Mari more than any other place she had wandered by on her way here. "Sorry about that, whatever that was from me before...I...I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the best with all this newness these days." And social anything as well.

“Exactly” Kallie grinned back, Mari seemed to have a decent understanding and with a good head on her shoulders. Her resume had been neat and definitely impressed the older blonde. “It’s only been me and sometimes one of my brothers or sisters. I was going to put up an ad soon so you’ve come at the right time really.” Kallie spoke casually as the conversation flowed. She didn’t mind mentioning her siblings, if Mari was planning to work in the cafe it was likely she’d eventually meet a few of them from time to time.
Introductions were always overrated. While Kallie told her own story of her first job, she could see some the panic subsided in Mari. “Just try not to spill coffee or shout at me” she joked with a wink. Kallie had already in her thoughts approved of Mari coming to work for her. She seemed like a real sweet girl that could easily handle working in a cafe once she’d gotten the basics down. Before Kallie offered her the job officially, she’d planned to get some basic knowledge about Mari. A little get-to-know-you was exactly what Kallie had in mind.
Kallie smirked at the answer, “Good to know I’m not the only one with a sweet tooth” she spoke back while she added sugar into both drinks. Kallie honestly had never done interviews or anything of the sort in her life. She didn’t like the idea of making them out to be anything more than a casual discussion over a drink. She’d made the place for people to feel at home, that included potential employees. Carrying both mugs she nodded for Mari to follow her. Picking out a spot away from the other customers, Kallie made sure to keep the counter in view in case someone needed to be served. The bell above the front door would at least let her know if anyone arrives or leaves.
Getting comfortable in her seat she’d placed Mari’s mug down in the space opposite her. As M ari spoke again Kallie listened with a small nod, “You’re fine, really. Job searching is a lot of pressure.” Something about the girls words had caught her ear. Sipping her coffee she followed her comment with a question “So you’ve had a lot of newness lately too?” Kallie could relate to that herself. Only having moved here less than two months ago she was still trying to settle into a life where she didn’t have to expect to leave again. It was unusual to say the least.

Mari was pleased at how...relaxed and kind Kallie seemed to be so far, it made the idea of working here that much greater. A soft smile remained on the younger lady's lips as she tried to make her way through all of this without screwing up royally. She wasn't this big of a social mess, it was just...getting to that comfortable stage where she could truly be herself that was the hard part, she hoped in due time that would all go away and she'd be able to not feel so...awkward. “Oh, that's great then. This place looks...very nice, very cozy,” She complimented to start, “A family business, then? That's pretty great as well...” If it worked out though, her parent's practice back home had been good...until it burst into flames and caused her life to go into a downwards spiral.
And now she was here.
“Oh, I think I can manage that...I don't...I don't think I yell or anything.” Mari was fairly soft spoken, but not unheard, she wasn't THAT shy, she just kept quiet most of the time, and shouting wasn't really in her nature, she had never really had purpose to, unless she was being picked on, or family issues were happening at home. She knew better than that, but the teasing was almost enough to really put Mari's nerves at ease. “But I'll keep that in mind, no shouting for me.” With an affirmative nod to the whole sweet tooth thing, Mari waited patiently before following Kallie as indicated, taking a seat and looking towards the warm mug in front of her. This was a lot more casual than she had imagined, but that was also very appealing, making this place seem more and more suitable for her, and hopefully she'd come out of her shell a bit more, demonstrate just how great she could be.
Nodding in agreement to Kallie's words, Mari took a sip of her coffee before placing down her mug again and finding that small smile of hers widening slightly. Mmmm, just enough sugar, but not overbearingly sweet – even if she had said an unhealthy amount of sugar. “I haven't had to actually interview or do any of this before, so I guess I was expecting this to be a bit more...intense, scary or something.” She shrugged before she was asked about her newness. Well...everything was new to her anymore, but she couldn't just start listing off things left and right could she? It wasn't a time to dive into your life story, that was for sure, unless she really didn't want to get hired. Dropping her gaze, smile still visible, Mari just gave a shrug of her shoulders once more, running a finger around the rim of her coffee mug. “I just moved here...like...two days ago. My uncle lives out here and offered me a place to stay...so...everything is new to me. New town, new atmosphere...everything.”
While Mari was just as curious herself, considering this place had only been open about a month, she wasn't going to ask questions in return, not yet. This was an interview right? It was getting to know her, she figured she could ask Kallie things about herself at a more appropriate time, and she planned to if all went well! “It's...taking a lot to convince me that the move was a good idea, but it's only been two days...so I can't really judge just yet, I suppose. It's just...different.”

Kallie smiled more upon hearing it be called a family business. She’d really liked the ring it had to it. “Yeah just like that. Just if you see any of the other staff up to no good, don’t be worried about telling me. Family or not, we’re a team here” she nodded more sternly. Kallie adored her family and trusted them with her life, but she wasn’t about to play favorites when it came to business. They knew the score. No messing around when it came to the cafe.
She let out a soft chuckle at Mari’s comment about her lack of yelling. She certainly seemed too innocent to be brave enough to do something like that. Though Kallie expected the other female would surprise her. This town had been full of new surprises so far. Kallie couldn’t wait to see how her future would fair here.
Listening to Mari talk about her lack of interviews made Kallie nod “Yeah it’s all new for me too. Didn’t really need to do it for family, just gave them the shifts hah” She grinned some more. “So I saw on your resume you have past job experience. Will you be okay dealing with customers and cleaning up after them? It’s fairly easy work, just remembering big orders to begin with can be scary. I’ll be around to help you with training though.” Kallie sipped on her coffee while she listened Mari talk about being new in town. She’d noticed the location of her previous job was quite a while away. She’d guessed Mari had come from that location. Didn’t seem like she was a traveller though. “You’ll like it here, lots of friendly faces. Working in a cafe should help you get to know the locals a little better too.”
Kallie nodded “Still early days, I think you’ll warm up to it in no time.” Her smile brightened as Kallie thought of the small town as her own home. She’d fallen in love long before moving in. The good has outweighed any bad as of yet. It was just convincing some of her siblings of the same thing. “So I take it you definitely want the job? When can you start?” Kallie smiled some more, she felt elated to be giving someone a job offer. It was an exciting feeling to be getting her first official employee.

Mari was really starting to feel more and more comfortable the more she spoke with Kallie. It was like any other person really, unless the opposing person really gave her a bad vibe. Kallisto did nothing of the sort, she seemed very nice...and she certainly didn't shoo Mari away for her somewhat timid attitude to start, but that was starting to melt away at the very least. The more time she spent in Valhaven the more she assumed she would come out of her shell. Confronting her about other staff members though...that was going to be something she would probably never get used to, but have to do it. She was right, they were supposed to be a team, like any job. “Alright, I'll...keep that in mind.” She was somewhat quick to answer – it sounded like she had the job, but didn't want to assume anything else right away.
“Yeah, I should be fine. I did this kind of stuff back home as well. After a few days of getting accustomed to...everything...I should be fine.” That meant routines, the people, everything. She'd come out of her shell a bit more, be a bit more outgoing and once she got to know some people, her more fun side could come out through her work. She was looking forward to not feeling so closed off and shy, it wasn't exactly a choice but...she liked to feel comfortable at the very least. Kallie so far was the best person she could have run across. Roland was great and all, but getting a perspective from someone who wasn't related to you...that did give Mari a little more hope that things would be fine. She would get to know the town, the people, the way of life here fairly quickly she imagined, and she was grateful for the other blonde's encouraging words. “I hope so, I really...really want it to work out here.” She didn't want to go back home, not after everything she had been put through in her years.
Looking down towards her cup of coffee, just having her hands around the mug, Mari was more or less warming her hands there for a moment, mulling over everything that had been said, but Kallie's next statement really caught Mari's attention. “I do! I really do! I can start whenever you want me to start.” Mari seemed more enthusiastic and eager now than she had before, a job hanging right in front of her face. Taking a sip from her coffee, Mari's entire personality seemed to just...illuminate, at least slightly. “Oh man, I really look forward to working here you have no idea...and...thank you for the opportunity! I wont let you down.”
