| It was so hot outside! Max hated being outside during the daytime, but unfortunately it was necessary if he was going to blend in with society here. It was ok if he only stayed outside in short bursts, but he would get a really bad rash if it took too long to get indoors. It would essentially be a nasty sunburn, but it would happen much quicker to him than a normal person. A living person.
It was as he was passing by a café, trying to stay in the shade of the awnings, that he saw a flyer in a window. It read ‘help wanted – apply within’. Green eyes widened in shock for a moment, before a tiny smile touched his lips. Depending on the kind of work, maybe he could find a place to belong! He could actually make money…and maybe find a place to live…
Taking a deep breath, he pushed open the door and flinched as there was a telling jingle from the door. Looking up at it with a frown, as though it had betrayed him, he looked around nervously. There was a blonde woman standing behind the counter, and it was surprisingly sparse inside, customer-wise. Slowly, tentatively making it closer the counter, he ducked his head as he approached the woman. Swallowing thickly for a moment, he took a deep breath.
“U-Um…hel…hello? Um…are you still…looking for someone…for work?” he asked softly, his voice barely audible over the rather soft din of the café. But he was trying!

a new beginning Kallie loved her cafe, it had been everything she’d imagined it to be and more. This whole settling down business was actually turning out to be pretty amazing. Not all of her siblings might have agreed but at least everyone was doing their part to try and make it work. Standing beside her counter Kallie was doodling in a notebook. She wasn’t amazing at art or anything, but it passed the time between customers. Outside of peak times the cafe was generally fairly quiet. There was maybe three or four customers sitting around with their drinks and reading or chatting. They paid no attention to their surroundings so Kallie was mostly left to her own devices to clean around them or draw. Hearing the bell above the door notified her if someone was coming or going. Lifting her head up from the paper below she rested her eyes on the wide eyed youngster. Her attention didn’t stay on him. Looking back down to her drawing she slowly closed the journal and placed the pencil on top, pushing it to the side out of the way. The young male approached and Kallie looked back up to him with a smile. Her elbows rested on the counter and fingers knitted together in front of her. The closer he got the more she could smell it. His scent grew thicker in the air. A vampire. “Hey there” she spoke cheerfully. Showing no sign of what she was thinking about. When he began to talk, she was surprised at just how quiet he was. Had her hearing not been as sensitive as hers she might not have heard it at all. “Oh - Yeah, yeah of course. You’re interested?”Kallie had been taken off guard by how the young vampire acted, she’d certainly not expected him to be wanting a job. Finally she spoke once more, in a softer tone this time. Hoping a more soothing voice would help him feel more at ease. “My name's Kallie, what’s yours?”Made by Rora of Valhaven ♥

| Max hadn’t noticed that the blonde had been doodling when he approached. If he had, he probably would have started apologizing profusely for interrupting her. As it was, he had missed it, and the journal had been closed by the time he made his way to the counter, it was clear that he was incredibly nervous. Max actually flinched slightly as she greeted him, although he really had no need to be so afraid. She wasn’t angry, she had no reason to hurt him.
Softly asking about the job opening that had been posted in the window, he ran his fingers through his dark hair and nodded shyly with his eyes averted as she asked if he was interested. He knew he would need to speak up more. But he had never had a real job before. He had only helped on farms as he moved from place to place. That should be scarier than talking to a small town café-worker, shouldn’t it?
Swallowing nervously, he gasped as she offered her name, and he could have hit himself. He should have started with that! Not ‘gimme a job’! “I’m…M-Max.” he said, and although his voice was still incredibly soft, there was a tiny increase in volume. “I…um…I’ve never…had a real job before. Just…um…farmwork…sorta…” Shifting uncomfortably from foot to foot, he finally met Kallie’s eyes. “If you…If you don’t want to…hire me…I understand.” He had no qualifications.

a new beginning Kallie wasn’t sure what to make of the newcomer. His smell pointed to something non-human yet he was just as awkward and shy as any regular teenager, if not more. “Max, it’s a nice name. Short for something?” she reassured him with a smile. As he spoke again she looked somewhat surprised at him. He’d never had a job, so he was still very young. “Oh.” she started, recovering quickly as he started to talk some more. “No! No, I’m sure we can find something for you to do. I could really use the help honestly, so you’re doing me a favor” Kallie nodded. She wasn’t struggling too much to hold down the fort but making Max feel like he’d be an asset might boost his confidence up a little. Hands patting the counter she pushed herself away from it. “So, do you want a drink or something?” Internally she could have smacked herself for not asking the most obvious question. “How old are you anyway? Are you even allowed to have coffee?” Kallie squinted back at Max with a mug now in her hands. He’d likely tell her his human age, but she was also curious how old the little bean really was. | Max flinched as Kallie asked if his name was short for something. Keeping his eyes anywhere but on the blonde, he shifted again in discomfort. “N-No…just…just Max.” he lied, not wanting to go any further into that line of questioning. The name ‘Maximus’ only made him think of his father, and how badly he had failed his mother. She had died because he couldn’t live up to the name he had been given – it was all his fault. He was nothing more than a failure, both to his family and at being a vampire. He should have given up the moment he was Turned…
Instead, he decided in his head that maybe it wouldn’t be the best thing for him to work here. He would just fail at that, too. And he would bring down the business. So he gave her an easy out. After all, she would probably just give him a job out of pity or something. But instead, she seemed eager to hire him and he lifted startled green eyes to meet hers. “W-What? Really?” Why on Earth would she hire someone like him? He had absolutely no qualifications! He couldn’t even talk to people properly.
Running his fingers through his hair nervously, he averted his eyes again as he was offered a drink. “Uh…ok. Um…maybe just a coffee? With room for a bit of cream and sugar? Please?” Barely remembering to tack on the ‘please’ at the end, he lowered his eyes once more before pulling his wallet from his pocket. It was…pretty light. He had enough for the coffee, at least. He wasn’t sure he would be able to splurge on anything else. He still had to find an apartment, too. He had been living in a cave since his arrival.
Blinking in surprise as her delayed question hit him, he licked his lips nervously. “Um…I’m…I’m sixteen. Pretty sure I…I can drink coffee…?” Was there a rule he was missing? He’d always had coffee in the mornings on the farms he stayed at…

a new beginning Kallie remained curious about the stranger before her. His nervous behaviour seemed to indicate he was very new to this, though at the same he also had that undeniable smell of a vampire. Kallie could recognize that scent from anywhere. It wasn’t particularly enjoyable to breathe in, but something she could just as easily ignore. “Alright just Max, I’d love to give you a trial run and see how you do?” Of course Kallie was curious to know more about him, but it wasn’t something they could do in such a public setting. He genuinely seemed interested in working for her, and Kallie had no qualms with his kind. She should maybe warn him about some of her siblings though, try to keep their work schedules separate. When he came across as surprised she had to chuckle. He must have come in expecting to fail. Kallie saw some innocence in that, it was endearing. “Yeah, really. If you’re not comfortable taking orders we could use someone taking care of the floor. There’s a small kitchen downstairs where I make the soups and things too. I could teach you that.” She ran though her usual tasks and imagined how nice it would be to delegate those jobs to some more workers. It could leave her to get on with working through their accounts and stock. Giving a small nod to what he wanted to drink she began brewing up a mug for him. Cream and sugar just like he wanted. Hearing the sound of rummaged pockets she’d wandered past the counter with both their drinks to find them a quiet booth. “No need for payment. Just something while we talk.” She nodded to acknowledge his comment over. Getting herself comfortable she pushed his coffee towards the adjacent seat. “So I do have some other staff but you’ll be working just with me until you’re trained. Nothing too crazy, just how to work the coffee machine and bits like that.” Kallie sipped her coffee and watched the younger male curiously “How long have you been in Valhaven then?”Made by Rora of Valhaven ♥

He's trying...a li'l bit... | Max was floored that Kallie was willing to give him a chance, and he offered her a shy, but grateful smile as he nodded. “O-Ok…I’d…I’d really like that.” he said quietly. He was still nervous, but it was a little more under control now. It was at this point that he realized that there was something different about Kallie. Why did he feel so intimidated by her? Max was intimidated by nearly everybody, but this was something else. What was it?
Studying her curiously for a moment, he couldn’t help but give her another small smile as she seemed willing to figure out the perfect place for him. Shifting awkwardly on his feet for a moment, he shrugged his shoulders. “I’ve…I’ve cooked before…only a little, though. A-And…I could clean…or…or um…stock the…basement? Or back room? Or…I could learn…other things…” Max looked back at the floor with another shrug. It was really Kallie’s choice where he went. She might be willing to take his feelings into account but if he was going to work for her…she would have the final say and he would just have to deal with whatever she dealt him.
Kallie was kind enough to offer him a drink, and Max dug in his pockets for his wallet when she said not to worry about it. Biting his lip for a moment, he supposed it was Kallie’s shop. If she wanted to give him something for free, he should just accept it, right? “Oh…um…thank you…” Gingerly lowering himself into the seat beside Kallie, his eyes darted to her before returning to his mug of coffee that she had made for him. It smelled good, and it looked like the perfect colouring. She had put just the right amount of cream into it.
Just as he lifted the mug to his lips, Kallie spoke up again, prompting the bright green eyes to turn her way again. There were more employees…that made sense. He couldn’t have been the first one to come look for a job, and realistically, he had thought this café had been here for a while. It seemed well established, anyway. He had no idea how recent it might have been. “Me? I uh…I just got here…yesterday.” he said softly, lowering his eyes again as he took another sip. “I…I’ve just been…traveling. S-So…” Max was clearly uncomfortable with the topic, even if it was a natural question. Kallie would need to know about him, anyway.
“Um…what…what about…you?” How long had Kallie been here?
