Mari was really getting used to this place.
She enjoyed working at the Strongbrew cafe already, she felt rather at home after the first few days and appreciated the chance she had been given by Kallie. It was nice to start seeing things fall into place so quickly upon arriving here, it made the blonde...beyond happy. She was sure that with this she could save a little bit more money back before classes started next semester, and that she could get a few things she wanted for her little living space as well. She needed to ensure that she had everything she needed to be successful in school...since she couldn't exactly bring a lot with her on the plane ride all the way out here, but she did try to do her best in that regard.
Until she could afford some of these things that she needed, maybe, Mari was going to work what she could, as well as continue to get settled. She didn't know names and faces of the locals yet, but she was trying pretty hard to do so. It was good customer service that way, right? The afternoon had been pretty steady, a small rush around lunch time...but now things had quieted down for the most part, leaving Mari a little time to breathe, gather her bearings and just...continue to tell herself that this move was a good thing. Everything away from her old home was a good thing. What had peaked her interest was the presence of yet another new face here, having started after her by a short time, it was something they had in common then...and she didn't feel as if she was the only new person in this place. That could be something to talk about, maybe. Or the new guy could just ignore her...like a lot of people tended to do that back home, this would be no different.
Gazing towards the new face, Mari was certain he was younger than she, perhaps by only a few years, but there was something about his demeanor that was a little...more timid than even she was. That was surprising. Instead of looking too much into all of that, she decided maybe being friendly was a good place to start. Putting a small smile on her face and figuring that since things were slow and they likely had the time, she was going to be friendly, and hopefully receive a positive response in return. Wandering over towards the counter where the teenager was working, Mari placed her hands behind her back and continued to try and look approachable at best, she wasn't the best at socializing, let alone starting off conversations! “So, you're new here too, huh? Just to the cafe? Or...are you new to Valhaven too?” The blonde questioned, hazel green eyes staying locked on the male teen. “I never got to introduce myself before, I'm Mari...I...figured if we're going to be working together, might as well try and start off on the right...foot...?”
Mari's own timid demeanor, at least slightly, was shining a little bit, but she was being brave and pushing past it. If the dark haired teen – she swore his name was...Max? - decided not to engage in any friendly conversation with her, then she could easily take that hint and move on, but it was in her nature to be kind and polite, this was no exception, especially at the work place.

| Max had been shocked, in all honesty, to be given a job by Kallie, but he was grateful that she was willing to give him a chance when she had absolutely no reason to. The good thing was, he was a quick learner – so learning how to make the various drinks was simple enough. Taking the money and making change was easy, too. He may not have had more than an elementary grade education, but he could still do basic math quite easily. Regardless of what he thought of himself, Max wasn’t stupid.
It was the interactions he struggled with. He barely met anybody’s eyes, and was much more comfortable behind the counter than working the floor. He knew it would need to change at some point, but…he wasn’t ready yet. Today he was working with the younger blonde woman, and although she was quiet, too, she was much better at talking with people than he was. He had watched her periodically throughout their shift, but his head was down when she eventually approached him. Jumping slightly as he was addressed, he looked up with slightly startled green eyes.
Opening his mouth in stunned silence for a few moments, he cleared his throat before nodding. “Um…I’m…I’m new…to V-Valhaven…” he responded softly, licking his lips before he averted his eyes again. She was a girl, so he didn’t mind looking at her, but it seemed he hadn’t kicked his habit of submission to everyone. But she wasn’t finished there. Lifting his eyes again as she introduced herself as Mari, he offered her a tiny, shy smile. “I’m…Max.” It was strange seeing her back down a little bit in terms of her confidence level, but if anything it made him stand up a smidgeon of a fraction straighter.
“Um…do you know many people here?” I…only know Kallie…so far…well…and you…now…” he said, which was quite a bit for him to say in one go. But she seemed nice.

Mari was always pretty friendly, perhaps not the most social, but she was kind. Wanting to get to know those she would be working with, Mari did have the courage to step up to the other new face, he was a little newer than she was, if only by a few days at least. Having approached the new face, Mari was sure they'd have enough downtime before anyone else came in or needed anything, she wanted to properly introduce herself. Maybe part of this was the fact that she didn't...hardly know anyone, and making some form of social interaction, besides...they'd be working together...so it made sense to at least get on a nice first name basis.
With a small smile on her lips, hands folded together, Mari looked towards the obviously somewhat nervous teen, watching his eyes, watching his expressions, anything she could catch that told her little bits about him. She knew some of those looks, that shyness...she held a bit of that herself, but she had to wonder if that was just how he had always been...or if something had caused it. Being friendly, approaching and speaking, Mari could hear the breaks in his sentences but didn't judge, she wasn't completely consistent with her own after all, but she did appreciate that she wasn't ignored, that was a good sign. Ah, he was new to the town as well, something else they seemed to have in common, though Mari wasn't sure she wanted to start digging in on that conversation. “Neat,” She had simply stated before she got his name. Max. “It's nice to meet you Max.” Her polite attitude would likely never fade away, she just had to wonder if in time Max wouldn't be quite so shy...so broken in words around her.
Maybe...maybe not, it could've just been who he was.
Having faltered only slightly in her own confidence for a moment, Mari was a little surprised when he kept their awkward little conversation going, blinking slightly and staring at the teenager before giving a shrug. “Truth be told...I'm rather new to town myself. I know Kallie and...my uncle, that's about it, at least by name.” She explained slightly, moving one hand to rub at the opposing arm, she wasn't uncomfortable, but sometimes it was keeping conversations alive that was difficult. “I moved from across the country, I plan to head to the University next semester...I'm sure I'll tend to meet people there, and here...it's just...I guess I'm not the most outgoing person. I remember faces and stuff, but never names.” Another shrug, a tiny hint of a laugh breezing past her lips before she took a glance around the cafe, everyone was still doing just fine. “What brought you out here anyways? Tiny town like this...doesn't seem like a place many would even know about...a hole in the wall sort of town...I've never been able to locate it on a map...” She came out here for...family, schooling, escaping things back home. Everyone had a story, didn't they?

| Max didn’t mind that Mari had come to talk to him, but it had been entirely unexpected that she had actually approached and introduced herself. She wasn’t as intimidating as Kallie – there was something different about the café owner, but he couldn’t figure out what it was. Granted, he wasn’t trying very hard to. But Mari was different. Her mannerisms were more akin to his own, but she was a little more outgoing than he was. She was also very pretty, innocence just radiating from her. He liked that about her, but that didn’t stop him from being shy when she did actually speak to him.
He answered her questions as best he could, but his words and sentences were incredibly broken. Max could have kicked himself. Mari was being nice, so why couldn’t he just accept that and act normal around her? She didn’t seem to mind, though, and told him that it was nice to meet him. He didn’t think…anybody had ever said it before and sounded so…sincere. “It’s…It’s nice to meet you, too.” He even offered her a small smile. There was nothing wrong with Mari, and he swore he could smell the innocence just radiating off of her. That drew him to her, more than anything. She was just as she seemed. There was no using…or abusing…of him, that he could tell. She was simply being nice to him. There was no reason he couldn’t be nice back. Right?
Showing that he wanted to keep their little conversation going, nervous though he was, he even surprised himself a little bit as he spoke up next. Green eyes were fixed on Mari as she spoke, and he was surprised to learn that she was almost as new to town as he was! “You…have family here? That’s…that’s nice…I suppose.” Max was trying to be a little more upbeat, but he hadn’t had the best track record when it came to family, and couldn’t muster up any sort of real enthusiasm. Catching the movement of her hand going for her arm, his eyes shifted to take in the action. Was she just as nervous as he was? Mari was speaking again, though, and Max swallowed as he lifted his eyes back to study her expression as she spoke.
Oh…she was going to university? That meant she was smart…really smart. “I think…you’ll be great.” he said softly, offering her another small smile. “Do you…do you have to be…outgoing?” That didn’t seem like it mattered, when it came to school. Max had always done well, for as limited as his education was, and he’d had no friends while he was in school. Maybe university was different, though. Lowering his eyes again, he sighed softly. He really didn’t know anything…about anything. But she had let out a small laugh, causing him to lift his eyes back to hers in surprise. She had laughed!
Biting his lip in concern, being careful not to show his elongated fangs in the process, he looked away again as Mari asked what had brought him out here. “I…well I…I just sort of…stumbled on the town. I’ve been traveling…a while…” About 35 years or so, to be exact. Swallowing nervously, he shrugged his shoulders with his eyes still averted. “Just…happenstance…I suppose.” If only he could get away with feeding on the animals. He only fed every couple of days, and he didn’t take enough to harm the animal. Only make it a little woozy, and then he would help it lie down so it could sleep it off. He was always kind to the animals, and had yet to drink a single drop of human blood. But if anybody were to find out…

Being social and outgoing wasn't exactly Mari's strong suit, but she wasn't just going to come to this new town and not try and make any friends, or have anyone to talk to aside from Roland – he was a great guy and all...but you definitely needed to branch out some. The first and best place to start was at the work place, and while she was only working part time to save a bit of money for schooling and other things she needed, Mari was sure she'd spend a lot of her outside time here anyways. It was relaxing, she could see herself working on any school work here once classes actually started – if Kallie didn't mind, of course. “Yeah, my mom's brother lives out here...it was...kind of the best option to move, get away. I can't say if it's a good fit for me just yet but...I think we all needed some space...back home.” Considering her mother was a train wreck and a half, her father was in jail for who knows how long...yes, getting space was definitely the best idea, and Roland seemed to be about the only sane person in her family right now.
Someone she trusted entirely, too.
Speaking of schooling and what not, Mari was sure that once classes actually started, she'd settle in a little more. Meet people there! Perhaps even make some good friends along the way...it was a nice thought, but she also knew that it might not become a reality. She was okay with it, perhaps a little saddened by it, but she wasn't going to place any preliminary bets, she was new after all. “Oh...well thank you. I hope so...” Mari almost shied away from the compliment, but embraced it with open arms instead. He was a shy type too, but she also figured Max was honest as well...so she took his words to heart and hoped he was right. “No, you don't have to be outgoing, but I have to tell you...as much as I love my uncle Roland, having some friends around here...wouldn't be a bad thing.” Some gal pals she could hang out with, study buddies perhaps? It sounded so nice...and having left the small handful of friends she had back home...it was rather lonely out here.
Tossing the question of what brought Max here, Mari listened, giving him her undivided attention as he spoke. His broken words were easy for her to string together, knowing the feeling all to well, and she couldn't help but assume that there was a reason behind it – not that this was a time or place to mention it. Nor did she have any right, the two had only really just met...but the signs were there. Signs she knew. It saddened the young lady's heart to even assume that Max had been through hell and back, but...I mean...she knew the signs, they were there. No one was that incredibly shy or timid as soon as they could talk, were they? She was pretty shy herself and had only been a little similar back when her father was on a rampage, she had to assume that Max's experiences, whatever they were, had occurred for a longer period of time. Oh well, maybe...eventually...she could bring it up, if she felt so bold. “Well traveling is fun. I bet that was nice. At least Valhaven seems to be like a good and friendly little town...and the scenery is quite nice too,” Small talk. “I like to think this will be a good fit, for both your sake as well as my own...it's not easy being the new kid, is it?” A rhetorical question, but Mari was really starting to feel her comfort zone now, that was a good thing.
All it took was a few minutes chatting with someone and she could either feel comfortable...as if she needed to avoid you like the plague. Max was a nice young man, that much was apparent. A little damaged, much like herself, but nice all the same.

| Max was shifting a little bit from foot to foot as he spoke to Mari, but he was actually doing alright. Yes, he was stuttering and stumbling over his words, but he was actually conversing with her. Sort of. Nodding in understanding as Mari said that she had family out here – an uncle – he had to admit that he was curious about her hesitance about whether it would work out or not, but it wasn’t his place to ask. “Well…I uh…I hope it all…works out.” he said with a small smile. He really did hope the best for her, even if he didn’t know her that well. She seemed nice enough, at least. She was trying to get to know him, and was much nicer than anybody else he had met thus far. Not that…he disliked Kallie or anything…but Mari was much less intimidating.
Although he was a little uncomfortable with the subject of schooling, it sounded like Mari was well on her way to her university degree. Or, she would be, once university started. Just because Max was stupid, didn’t mean he had to make her feel badly about getting her own education. “I’m sure…I think you’ll be…amazing.” he said shyly, averting his eyes once more. But he had meant it when he had said that she didn’t need to be outgoing, although she had a very good point in return. “O-Oh. Yeah…I suppose so…” he said awkwardly, trying his best not to show how uncomfortable he was. It wasn’t Mari’s fault. He was talking much more than he normally did, and he was trying to be friendly. But…he had never had friends before. He couldn’t relate. But he supposed it would have been nice to have a friend, growing up. Maybe things would have been easier. Maybe…
Mari’s next question was a surprise, though, and it really shouldn’t have been. Explaining that he had been traveling before quite literally stumbling upon Valhaven, he gave Mari another small smile as she commented that it had to have been a lot of fun to just travel across the country. “I…I guess so. I mean, it’s nice to have a home, too.” he said softly, rubbing the back of his neck as he took a glance around the café. Nobody seemed to be wanting for anything yet. That was good. “It is very pretty here, though.” On that, Max could easily agree. It was a nice little town, although still a little scary for the timid young vampire.
Looking back to Mari in surprise, though, as she commented that Valhaven would be good for the two of them, Max bit his lip and lowered his eyes again with a little smile. “No. No it isn’t. But…at least you have your uncle?” Mari wasn’t truly alone – not like Max was. And although it was obvious that she was shy, too, she was at least a little more outgoing than Max. She would settle in just fine, he thought. He just hoped he would have the same success. “You know…you’re…a lot easier to…to talk to.” he said, his voice still incredibly soft. It was true, though. Mari was clearly a very sweet young lady. It made it much easier to talk to her, as opposed to anyone else he’d met in town thus far.
