Cooper Merle
FACE CLAIM: Ian Somerhalder
29 (553) Male Vampire Traveller Hetro ; Single |
Personality
Cooper is what I would call a lovable asshole, though he’d never consider himself as such a thing. He’d purposely go out of his way to do something bad, just to prove you wrong, if you tried to make him seem in anyway ‘lovable’.
He’s stubborn, rude, selfish, self-destructive, narcissistic, and will antagonise a situation just for the fun of it. He loves a little entertainment. It’s been a few hundred years since he’s felt a shred of humanity. He doesn’t believe he’s even capable of caring like that anymore. Even though a small part of him really does want to care. He’s just not very capable of showing that sort of emotion.
He may sometimes over-exaggerate just to make a point. Cooper's self-destructive tendency can sometimes make him unpredictable. He doesn’t always think ahead of his own actions, especially while upset/angry, it’s more of whatever satisfies him in the moment sort of thing. When he’s not reacting, he’s planning. He’s a self preservationist above all else.
Cooper hasn’t survived 500+ years just to become some vampire slush puppy.
History
Family Members:
- Sofia Reyes (Cooper's Sire) - deceased
- Amelia Renard-Dumont (Sired to Cooper) - alive
England 1463.
King Edward IV had very recently come to power during a battle for the throne. His house had been at war with another for almost ten years by this point. The civil war between houses caused many battles over England for the next twenty years or so. It came to be known as the War of the Roses. Cooper was the eldest of four to survive to adulthood. His father had gone to fight for the house of York, but wasn’t one of the few to return home.
England 1480’s.
Cooper hadn’t signed up to the war like some of his brothers had. The house of York eventually lost the throne entirely, and followed by a few different kinds. He suspected his brothers lives were lost during in the same battle. He’d not seen them for some years. Instead Cooper worked down at the docks, he’d married young and had four youngsters survive to childhood. Life wasn’t easy, but it was simple enough for Cooper to be content.
Eventually the Black Death ravaged the lands. Many fled to find somewhere free from the plague. It was already too late for the Merle household. He’d marked his own home with the red cross to indicate his family had been infected. He’d lost the children first, then his wife slowly lost her strength. He never stayed to the end, he couldn’t. Cooper had been one of the lucky few to not contact the disease just yet. As much as he loved her, he couldn’t watch her die.
Maybe that was the day he truly lost hope in humanity.
Spain 1492.
Cooper travelled, using what little money he had to his name to make his way to Spain and sought to settle down there. The further away from England the better. Having been seduced by a rather gorgeous brunette during one of his drinking escapades, he quickly learned the word vampire had some true meaning behind the fairy tales. Sofia Reyes had brought him back from the dead that evening. By this point, he was more than willing to follow her lead. She taught him everything he needed to know to be a vampire. Being far more ruthless than he’d ever seen, Cooper still had his own reservations.
Christopher Columbus set sail to discover Asia. Of the three ships, Cooper resided in one along with Sofia. With there being little in choice of meals on board they fed scarcely and carefully. Sofia taught him when to hide his tracks and when to indulge. By the time the ships had discovered America, he was completely besotted with her. Cooper couldn’t imagine being with anyone else. While it wasn’t exactly Asia, it was better than nothing.
Cooper settled down in America, enjoying his new life with Sofia beside him. They remained together over the next 400 years. Travelling and watching the world change.
America 1895.
By now telegraphs had become two way, the world was far different to the times of when Cooper was human. He’d grown to become just as ruthless and as dangerous as Sofia had first been. They were lax about hiding the body count they’d leave in their path. Out on one of their typical hunts they ran into trouble with a local wolf pack. Cooper made it out just fine, Sofia hadn’t been so lucky. She’d been bitten and the venom had already started to make quick work on her body.
They holed up in an abandoned home as Sofia’s condition worsened. Cooper tried to convince her to let him go find an antidote. He wouldn’t have learned of the healing properties of werewolf blood until many years later. The reason they’d gone into werewolf territory was his fault to begin with. Unfortunately, Sofia didn’t want to be alone. He didn’t want to be there, it broke him to watch her fade away. Their sire bond had been too strong for him to go against her final wishes.
After that was mostly a blur. For the first time in 400 years he was truly alone. He didn’t want to feel, and didn’t really care if he lived or died.
America 1905.
Cooper was still well into travelling and really going at it with his reckless behaviour across America. To celebrate ten years marking the death of Sofia, he turned a young woman to be his companion. He hadn’t been thinking. Cooper was still too deep in his own grief to really put much thought into who he’d choose as his successor. The redhead had just been at the wrong place at the wrong time. She’d given him a little attitude and that was all it took.
Amelia Renard-Dumont rose the following morning with an insatiable thirst. Cooper had already brought a little breakfast for her and from there they stayed together. It wasn’t a bond like it’d been with Sofia, nothing like it. Amelia was rude and constantly challenged him. They bickered and fought like an old married couple for more than a decade. They were both as stubborn as the other. Amelia hated him for taking her human life away, she was meant to have been wed that week had he not come in and ruined it for her. Cooper blamed her for not being the companion he craved. This went on for longer than it should.
America 1967.
More than sixty years together had been the final straw for Amelia. She’d tried so hard to there for Cooper. They’d had a few moments of clarity over the years, but Cooper was always quick to ruin them with his own self-destructive tendencies. Time and time again Amelia watched him continue the same vicious circle of him wanting to be a better person and quickly demolishing it over the smallest of problems. She’d learned plenty from Cooper, but she’d been deeply unhappy for some time.
One particularly heated argument lead to them going separate ways. Cooper was alone by choice and intended to stay that way for good this time. Over the next few decades he continued to travel, sometimes he’d bump into old friends but he wouldn’t linger for more than a few years. He’s met up with Amelia for old times sake a few times too. She seemed to be doing far better with her own independence. Time apart had brought them somewhat closer. He’d still been her sire after all. Part of her wished nothing more than to continue their travels together. The occasional meetings were something she’d began to look forward to.
In more recent years he’d run into a face he’d met once before. Not exactly a friend but not someone he intended to kill either. The demon seemed intent on making some werewolf his pet or something. Cooper never cared for details. He was interested to watch it play out, though sadly witchcraft came into play. Cooper stuck around long enough to ensure the demon escaped but left himself shortly after. Ending up in Valhaven he decided this tiny town wouldn’t have minded a little excitement by being graced with the presence of Cooper.
